10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is not always fun for many of us. But it is important. As the winter end and we start looking forward to spring, something within us encourages us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and purging things we’ve collected throughout the winter.
But who says spring cleaning is limited to the inside of your home?
The outside of your house could use a little tidying up after a cold, wet winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will improve the appearance of your house in San Marcos, and, even more important, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save you a lot ofmoney in years to come.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the optimal time of year to clean your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris pile up in the fall and winter. Pollen is at its highest in the spring, making a mess in your gutters and downspouts if they are not properly cleaned.
Plus, pests and critters are looking for places to build homes in spring, so getting your gutters cleaned will help prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew and rust stains and returning them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Residential window cleaning is essential for spring cleaning. First floor windows shouldn’t cause you too much of a headache, but any second and third floor windows can be tougher to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a hard chore, and it will need a lot of supplies, not to mention climbing up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the perfect solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You do not want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty home. Which means you will want to pressure wash your house too!
Pressure washing is quick, effective and doesn’t cost very much. You can clean your home, outdoor furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with very little effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they won’t permanently stain your house, and you can prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning might seem counter-productive since you will be driving on it, but, a clean, cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your house.
A professional pressure washing company will do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, stone or another material. Also consider adding a gravel border to your home’s driveway to really make it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio gets the most use throughout the summer, so it is easy to overlook it in the winter when you are not doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio can be in bad shape the first time you go onto it in the spring.
Soap and water – and a little elbow grease – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if there are signs of mold or mildew, you need to consider a more serious option, like power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer.
6. Roof Cleaning
Mold and moss are common home roof issues in San Marcos. While you are cleaning the outside of your house, it’s a great time to clean your home’s roof too, but you will have to use a different method than what you use for most of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you start to see streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the reason. Moss is usually obvious, too. These contaminants cannot be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your house. Both of these methods will ruin the shingles on your home’s roof.
The ideal course of action for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach solution and leave it be. This solution will eliminate any organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Spruce up the Front
The front of your house is probably what most people see, so make the best impression you can for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Returning home to a beautiful exterior will improve your day, and it will even motivate you to spend a lot more time outdoors.
You can clean your porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and mud off of the front porch, and consider painting it for a bright look! Clean unnoticed areas such as the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Garden Tools
You’ll be spending more time outdoors, so spring is an excellent time to organize whatever you will need for outdoor work.
Yard tools and pool care equipment need to all have an exact area outside your house – a place that it is safe from weather and out of sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Taking the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the outside of your house so much more throughout the time of year when you spend the most time outdoors.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your lawn, trees and garden bushes can make a major impact on the overall look of your house.
Kill weeds near your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you’ll be planting in the future and sweep off walkways. You can spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard care easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for months, your grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are unappetizing, but even worse they can make you and your family sick.
Wet it down to remove ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber or grill brush (so you don’t leave behind particles that can get into food) and a detergent or degreaser.
